The incessant stigma around mental illness in Jamaica has resulted in hundreds of discharged patients living at the Bellevue Hospital in Kingston for decades.
This is a result of being abandoned by their relatives and cast aside by their friends. CEO, of Bellevue Hospital Suzette Buchanan, says the lack of support for these patients stems from the stigma associated with mental illness and the lack of awareness regarding mental health challenges.
