May 23, 2023, will mark 85 years since the labour movement was established in 1938. On the second day of the month government officials and other key stakeholders gathered for the launch of Workers’ Week at the office of the Prime Minister (PM).
The media launch was off to great start as several government ministries came together to observe the monumental week. Prime Minister Andrew Holness in his address points out that the journey from 1938 has been a long one, noting today’s workforce is far more structured and advanced. He adds today’s Jamaican society now has myriads of Unions fighting for the rights of Jamaicans in the workplace. PM Holness notes that Jamaicans should keep in mind the hard work done by heroes such as Samuel Sharpe and Paul Bogle who championed the rights for equity and freedom.
As Labour Week is observed the Prime Minister highlights a concern for the maintenance of the environment.
