Students attending almost every tertiary institution, received monetary assistance, from the western St Mary, Constituency Development Fund. The checks, in the name of the institutions, were handed over in the week at the Gayle Civic Center, in the parish. A story to inspire and so it was told by the man himself who entered politics in 1990 as councillor for Carron Hall in St Mary.
Now western St Mary Member of Parliament, Robert Montague, reminds the grateful beneficiaries the funds are not gifts but rather investments by the taxpayers of Jamaica. He went on to urge the students not to accept the limitations placed on them by others nor to impose barriers on themselves. Montague says he was told by a mayor he would never ascend to the post of Mayor, which only served to fuel his dream. He later became Mayor of Port Maria and held several ministerial posts over the years. He also urged them to help build community organizations. Several other stakeholders including councillors and specially invited guests from the government were also on hand to cheer on the work of the students and encourage them towards giving back. The Member of Parliament says an additional 40 students will receive support once they get the examination results and acceptance letters from the institution of their choice.
