The police have taken three men into custody for illegal possession of firearm, after finding 9 illegal guns in the men’s vehicles. Investigations are still ongoing. The police have apprehended three men, and seized nine illegal firearms, with 44 rounds of ammunition along the Edward Seaga Highway in St. Catherine on Friday.
Police reports are that a white Toyota Axio was spotted piloting a white ad wagon without a license plate along the highway. Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey says that triggered the suspicion of the officers, resulting in a team being mobilized and the men being nabbed. He says the three men are now in custody, as the investigations continue.
Meanwhile, two men were fatally shot in an alleged shoot out with the police along the same highway Thursday night. The men are yet to be identified; however police reports are that a team of officers were traveling along the highway, when an attempt was made to stop a vehicle. The men reportedly opened gunfire, to which the officers retaliated. The men were taken to hospital where they died.
The independent commission of investigations (INDECOM) has since launched an investigation into the matter. The commission reports that the three officers, who discharged their firearms during the incident, have already given preliminary accounts of the happening. Two firearms were seized from that scene, and the hands of the two deceased men have been tested for gunshot residue.
