It is a perfect age and stage to observe the rights of persons with disability – and the Petersfield Primary and Infant School are being counted among the places of learning where embracing the disabilities act towards inclusion is growing. All it took was for one child to be enrolled, for other parents who may otherwise have isolated their little ones. Rather than referring the children to other institutions, based on the necessary professional assessment from specific institutions with the requisite skills and recommendations, a shadow is assigned to each child, through the Education Ministry’s Special Education Unit.
These children who could have been lost in the education system are encouraged by their peers, even as they adapt and learn to embrace others. Credit is being given to mentorship, peer leadership, and individual and group counseling programmed under the Guidance Counseling Department at the Westmoreland school, for empowering all young minds.
