Bilateral Relations Strengthening Between Jamaica and Japan

As Jamaica and Japan move to strengthen their bilateral relations, the Japan Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met with members of the Jamaican government on Tuesday, July 20.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, says Motegi’s visit is timely as there is a great need for global partnership.

Minister Johnson Smith says the dynamic bilateral relations between Japan and Jamaica is especially expanding in areas of technical and economic cooperation.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Jamaica 55 years ago, it is the first time a Japan Foreign Minister is visiting the island.

Minister Motegi says Japan remains committed to assist Jamaica in areas such as marine security.

The parties say the visit is especially timely as the United Nations (UN) Climate Change COP-26 is coming up in October.

Senator Johnson Smith says Jamaica is pleased with Japan’s commitments to tackle the climate crisis.
