The body of an elderly woman who was washed away on September 30, by floodwaters in the Sandy Gully, St. Andrew was found on October 1, in the vicinity of Seaview Gardens.
Persistent heavy rains in sections of Kingston and St. Andrew Thursday surprised many, who were left soaked. 75-year-old Drewsland Resident, Beryl Bryan was not to be taken off guard. The elderly woman rushed to the nearby Sandy Gully to bring her goats there to safety but would end up falling victim to a sudden rush of water in the channel.
Head of the St. Andrew South police division, Superintendent Kirk Ricketts heaped praise for the residents who he said were swift in their response to search and find the senior citizen. He says the initial search was hindered by the darkness of the night, however resumed in the morning with the help of the residents and the fire brigade. The body of the victim was found around 2 pm on Friday.
He notes the gully can be unpredictable especially when it rains. The officer is reinforcing the need for extreme caution in traversing and using gullies and other waterways. He noted that this issue is not the first of its kind.
