It is Day Four of the State of Emergency (SOE) in St. Catherine, and business operators are already dreading the end of the intervention. Several stakeholders tell CVM LIVE that fourteen days is too short for the SOE, as crime is a significant threat to business.
President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Dennis Robotham tells CVM LIVE the imposition of the SOE was timely and undoubtedly relevant. He says it brings a sense of security to the business and consumers and is therefore recommending it be extended. However, he understands that the SOE is a short-term solution. Subsequently, and is urging for there to be more long-term strategies to quell crime, and by extension improve business.
The old capital was under siege for a sustained period, with several cases of shooting and murder.
