Crime has significantly decreased in the once-gritty, central Kingston area as residents shift their focus to football. In a time when many Jamaicans are seeking answers from the government on how it’ll reduce crime, residents of Central Kingston seem to have figured it out.
Residents have turned to sport, specifically football to aid in bringing peace to the crime-plagued communities.
The move came after a Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) was declared in the area after several killings were recorded.
Member of Parliament for Kingston Central, Donovan Williams says since the football competitions, there’s been no report of a crime. Donovan Williams – MP, Kingston Central says although appearing simple, the sport has sparked positive engagements among residents, further urging them to put aside longstanding differences. As part of the reform process, he says plans are underway for the engagement of female residents, through the use of netball.
