Chang Calls for More Psychosocial Support for Children

Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang is acknowledging that the level of public spend on social intervention for over a decade has not resulted in an equivalent level of returns within the targeted communities.

Speaking at the launch of a needs assessment for Case Management and Psychosocial support he says more must be done to include young people who are often neglected. National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang is prepared to strengthen social investment efforts to prevent crime. Using a study covering the five 2021 Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) in Kingston, St. Andrew, and St. James, the ministry has identified the need for support among key groups.

Funded by the European Union, the ‘needs assessment for case management and psychosocial services’ uncovered the need for more psychosocial support among vulnerable groups. The study evaluated needs of children, youth, and victims of gender-based violence, who will benefit from the main interventions of the Government. Dr. Chang informed that the security ministry is working alongside the ministry of education and youth to explore areas of common interest. Chang notes that, getting social investment right does not take away from the need for a strong, professional, highly trained, intelligence driven, and technology supported police force.
