Despite receiving support in some segments of society, there are still some who classify the reimposed States of Public Emergency (SOPEs) as a breach of public safety, and an infringement on human rights; a view the National Security Minister countered saying the SOPEs are simply a tool to target criminals and protect the lives of innocent citizens.
The Andrew Holness-led administration remains resolute that the State of Public Emergency does not infringe on the aforementioned, as the government’s goal is simply to rid communities of violence-producers.
Addressing these mounting concerns, while lauding the effectiveness of the SOPEs as a crime-fighting tool, Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang mentions the charter of fundamental rights, which he says was designed by previous governments to prevent abuse, not to prevent the SOE.
He adds it is necessary to protect law-abiding citizens from the threat posed by criminals. The minister says the government intends to strengthen policy and legislative changes to support the security forces and achieve their goal. Watch the report:
