Child Protection Laws Under Scrutiny Amidst Rising Violence in Jamaica

In accordance with Section 9, Sub-sections 1 and 2 of the Child Care and Protection Act, individuals assaulting children to the point of unnecessary suffering or injury may face fines or imprisonment up to five years. Children’s Advocate, Diahann Gordon-Harrison, expresses concern about Jamaica’s escalating violence, particularly affecting the nation’s children.

Highlighting a recent incident involving the alleged beating of a 14-year-old by a group of women, Harrison acknowledges parental instincts to seek revenge but warns of potential complications. However, she addresses concerns about delayed justice, citing cases like Kaylan Dowdie, a 17-year-old assaulted in 2021, with the legal process yet unresolved. The mother of the 14-year-old victim echoes frustration with the perceived sluggishness of the justice system, questioning when resolution will be achieved, especially now with seven individuals charged in connection to the matter.
