Justice Minister Delroy Chuck told the Parliament in his sectoral contribution that several people have approached the Ministry in the last year seeking to apply for same-sex marriage.
He dismissed the notion adding “We do not support same-sex marriage” a practice he says is not permissible. Despite the world becoming more open to same-sex marriages, Jamaica continues to grant licenses only to heterosexual couples. And if there was any doubt as to whether that change would happen soon, hope for some was likely dashed after the justice Minister tossed the idea Tuesday. His detailed speech quickly grew controversial when he came to the marriage matter. And in case there was any doubt as to where exactly the government stood on the progressive view welcomed by many, the minister went deeper.
He then continued to boast that nearly 100 per cent of thousands of applications relating to marriage matters are handled within a 24-hour period. Watch the report:
