There is growing discontent among some members of the legal fraternity, following the recently passed new Firearms Act. At least one prominent member has expressed to CVM LIVE, great concern about provisions within the law, its inflexibility which could lead to abuse.
Attorney-At-Law Jacqueline Cummings notes the law is robbing judges of using their discretion to determine sentences. She says that takes away the independence of the judiciary. Cummings is also concerned that the maximum penalty for majority of the offences outlined in the act, is life imprisonment. She notes society created a culture of glorifying guns as a sign of being protected and deserving of respect. Therefore, the Attorney-At-Law insists, in order to stop that culture, the security forces need more resources to make people feel protected without their illegal weapons. Watch the report:
