Constable Killed in Linstead, Attacker Fatally Shot

A Police Constable was killed early Friday, September 24, after being attacked by a man of unsound mind along King’s Street in Linstead, St. Catherine.

Reports indicate that about 6:45 a.m. on Friday, 34-year-old Constable Paul Gordon was walking along King’s Street when a mentally challenged man used a stone to inflict a wound to his head, which subsequently killed him. Constable Gordon was assigned to the Technical Services division in Linstead.

Minutes after, while the police were trying to apprehend the suspect, he attacked the officers with a machete; he was fatally shot. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old, Alwayne Shakespeare, and based on information received, Shakespeare was a known troublemaker in the vicinity.

Councillor for the Linstead Division, Herbert Garricks, shared previous incidents involving Shakespeare, he noted that Shakespeare had hit a old woman and she is currently struggling to walk. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, Major General Antony Anderson describes the incident as tragic, and notes that he wishes for the parents of the deceased Constable to know the Jamaica Constabulary Force, (JCF) is there to support them.

The Independent Commission of Investigations, (INDECOM) has responded to and began investigations into the fatal shooting of the mentally ill man.
