While the recovery of Jamaica’s economy from the COVID-19 pandemic has been well publicized, with an expected return to pre-covid levels projected for next year, what has been more difficult to contemplate has been the impact on life expectancy. Recently former Barbados Central Bank Governor Delisle Worrell took steps to highlight and question the disparate impact on mortality experienced across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The magnitude of the global impact of the pandemic is reflected in the fact that the average life expectancy worldwide fell by 2.3%. The Latin American and Caribbean Regions were among the most impacted. The Central Banker surmises that there is a need for further investigation into the reason behind the observed results.
