Since the Executive Committee of the People’s National Party (PNP) rejected the nomination of Clarendon Central Caretaker Zuleika Jess for a Vice-Presidential post, concerns have arisen regarding the party’s support for her candidacy.
Jess was rejected after the party issued a press release stating that she does not meet the eligibility requirements.
Political Commentator, Canute Thompson, describes the party’s inconsistency as an incredibly unfortunate act. He believes the ruling listed in the PNP’s statement is accurate, adding that while the situation is unfavourable, it would be unfair for the party to change its rules to accommodate her situation. As described by Thompson, this is not a setback for Jess’ political career. He says this situation is reinforcing the idea that the party is divided, despite their efforts to present a united front.
Meanwhile, Thompson is confident in the candidates who have been granted the privilege to vie for the Vice-Presidential posts. He praises the selection for including a mix of gender, age, and experience.
