The heat intensifies with some critics of the National Housing Trust, (NHT) calling for protest action against the Trust for its alleged shift in mandate. More flak this, as applications for the luxury priced Ruthven Towers development open online.
Some Jamaicans peeved by the social media post made by the National Housing Trust are demanding the NHT deductions no longer made mandatory. Others are calling out the Government for not demanding a price adjustment from the Trust, suggesting a petition.
Trust eroded as backlash from various segments of society seemingly went unnoticed by the NHT this week. On Friday the entity, posted on Instagram inviting applications for its Ruthven Towers development which have been negatively highlighted due to their near 30 and 40 million dollar price tags.
Aside from a few sarcastic enquiries on how persons would be able to fund the portion their benefits do not cover, the bulk demanded action. Some insisted the contribution be halted or made voluntary for employees, noting despite their minimum earnings, they are being made to contribute to a trust they will never benefit from.
One user wrote, “we need to start a petition to get those prices down”, adding he is flabbergasted to say the least. Another argued: “Why are you asking people to apply when you know exactly who you built these for! She suggested, just messaging them privately and telling them to come for the keys. She added you guys are disgraceful; Manley is turning in his grave.
Others accused the Trust of operating like a Ponzi scheme or a scammer. Some of the critics explained that they have given up on the Government, stating, “I no longer trust in them or their provisions, of housing solutions for the working diaspora”
One commented that the masses should take protest action, while others noted the alleged scant regard shown by the entity despite the public outcry this week.
Persons also questioned why the NHT has put such emphasis on single room developments, noting the bulk of the apartments up for sale at the property are single bedroom. One user questioned, “why so much 1 bedrooms though NHT? What are you promoting, single life, no children, or was this really only for the investor with capital.
