The Opposition is affirming its stance on supporting teachers who are still feeling the effects of the recent negotiations between the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) and the Ministry of Finance. Opposition Spokesman on Education Damion Crawford says the constant letdown of teachers will lead to more migration.
Despite the new wage agreement between the government and the Jamaica Teachers Association, some teachers are still up arms due to wages owed. JTA President Lasonja Harrison revealed that a number of teachers to date have not been compensated for the month of March. In the meantime, speaking with CVM LIVE Monday, opposition spokesman on Education Damion Crawford says the constant delays on payments and promises will only lead to more protests.
He also notes more teachers will continue to exit the system. In March teachers staged a series of protests across the island demanding a substantial wage increase. Following the protests and agreement were signed by the JTA’s President-elect and the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
