Decade-Long Sewage Problem Frustrates Residents

The people of Portsmouth in Portmore, St. Catherine have had enough of the festering and gurgling sewage causing a stink in their community. The problem which has been aging with the community for decades has again seen the people calling for a solution from the National Water Commission, (NWC).

A smelly stew brews beneath this manhole cover in Portsmouth, Portmore. For 5 weeks sewage has been leaking into the road and polluting the air. The residents, on Monday, September 27, barricaded the entrance at Milton Road to demonstrate their frustration. One business woman in the area noted that it has been a constant bother, as she has customers that comes to her shop and a young daughter that lives with her.

One resident says the NWC paid a visit to assess the leak when it was first reported but has not returned since. He noted that the sewage is a recipe for disaster as this can increase the possibility of mosquito breeding sites. This and other health risk the murky water poses to residents is a growing concern. The residents want the authorities to clue them in on what has been happening to solve this problem.
