The mosquito-borne disease, dengue is still a threat to Jamaicans. Back in December, the Ministry of Health stepped up its enhanced vector control programme to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. However, there have been several reports of dengue cases since the start of the year.
Public education campaigns have been rolled out, vector control programmes are in effect and still dengue cases are widespread. The Ministry of Health and Wellness has employed one thousand temporary workers employed to carry out public education and search and destroy activities. This includes eliminating breeding sites and the expanded fogging programme to kill the adult mosquitos in high-risk and other communities.
Cases like these are the reason behind the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation’s (KSAMC) recent move. Members of the KSAMC are now visiting possible breeding sites in an effort to address the issue.
