Residents who were displaced from their homes in Shooters Hill two months ago following the heavy rainfall are again displaced from their shelter of refuge. The residents say they are in the dark concerning the reliefs promised to them to cushion the losses they suffered.
The room that once housed the displaced residents of Shooters Hill, Bull Bay is now disarranged with refused second-hand clothing. The school’s store-room is filled with cots and the residents have been told to find other places to live.
Three of the families were told they would be assisted by Member of Parliament Juliet Holness but they’ve since been told to leave the facility.
They say they’ve had no updates – The resident says Holness promised people in the shelter 60 thousand dollars each as a stipend to rent somewhere until they got back on their feet.
They also recounted promises made by the mayor. She says though this sum is minimal, it’s still not been granted.
A resident who was allegedly promised compensation similar to his neighbor says he too has heard nothing from the Member of Parliament since the last meeting which was two weeks after the devastation.
Efforts to contact Mrs Holness, Member of Parliament for the constituency proved futile.
However, Terry Forrester, Coordinator for the Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM) says residents have received help from different entities for items including housing.
