Medical doctors are weighing in on the Ministry of Health’s decision to import workers to clear the backlog of elective surgeries. While they welcome the additional personnel, they say the real issue lies in repairing and maintaining surgical equipment.
Jamaica Medical Doctors’ Association (JMDA) President Dr Mindi Fitz-Henley says the situation on the ground is compounded by infrastructural deficiencies.
President of the Medical Association of Jamaica Dr Brian James shares the same sentiment. He thinks the importation may not have as great an impact as expected. He suggests that more focus be placed on engaging those who are in the health care system.
There are an estimated five thousand elective surgeries dating as far back as 2020 to be addressed. This recruitment is being done through project CODE CARE which will enable at least 2,000 additional surgeries in facilities across Jamaica.
