The government has tabled a stronger, more robust firearms act that will see harsher penalties for persons found with illegal firearms and ammunition. Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang says a short term gun amnesty will be in implemented, for persons to surrender unregistered weapons before the bill is initiated.
National security minister, Dr. Horace Chang introduced a more robust firearms framework in parliament on Thursday.
Dr. Chang says guns are the weapons of choice for criminals in Jamaica, adding that the risk of being apprehended while in position of an illegal firearm and ammunition does not carry enough consequences. Meanwhile, the minister highlights clause 19 of the bill giving persons an opportunity to surrender unregistered weapons, before the new firearms act is initiated.
