The COVID-19 pandemic has caused hospital admissions to climb, and worries are mounting over bed capacity in the public health system. One medical doctor who has treated many COVID-19 patients says his colleagues both, private and public practitioners are much more confident in treating the virus after almost 18 months into the pandemic.
Dr. Roger Hunter who is one of the 2021 Medical Association of Jamaica President nominees says he has treated close to 100 COVID-19 patients, including the elderly, who he says have all lived. He stresses that early treatment, as well as treatment at home, are crucial in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr. Hunter says while he strongly recommends vaccination, early treatment works, adding that the drug Ivermectin is effective against the virus. He also describes a Pulse Oximeter as another simple important aspect of the solution.
Senior medical Dr. Paul Wright agrees with the treatment regime put forward by Dr. Hunter. However, he notes that availability is an issue in the treatment of COVID-19 patients in Jamaica, adding that Ivermectin needs to be freely available.
