FEAR OF CROCODILE ATTACK AFFECTING BUSINESSES

Holiday festivities were almost brought to an halt at beaches in Portmore, St Catherine following last month’s crocodile attack at Waves Beach. Two men reportedly went to beach in the evening and were attacked by the reptile leaving them with severe leg injuries. Since then many have been wary of visiting beaches in the area through fear of being attacked.

Crocodiles at the location are not new, as warning signs are placed at several locations. The public has also been urged to exercise greater caution in areas close to rivers, gullies and swamps. However, while this is been done, there have been several reports of crocodile attacks at various beaches. The incidents have reportedly led to a decline in business, with some business owners attempting to convince beach goers that the crocodiles do not venture out during the days.

When asked if crocodiles venture onto to beach at nights, one small business owner stated that the statement was false. He says the reptiles only leave the water during the days especially if its rains.

Over the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays, there was a noticeable decline in the number of persons at Hellshire Beach. Vendors have disclosed their frustration over the development citing that media reports have not been clear in stipulating the facts. They say many persons are not aware that the crocodile attack happened at another beach.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) asks the public to report any crocodile sightings and desist from provoking the reptiles as they may become defensive if cornered or attacked.
