In a democracy, as explained by Finance Minister, Dr Nigel Clarke, it is the everyday citizens who ultimately make the decision as to the direction of the country. Consequently, he says it is critically important for the average Jamaican to understand the national budget.
In a bid to achieve this, he’s partnering with the Ministry of Education to dissect the line items of the national budget to secondary students. Though the national budget debates were mere weeks ago, Finance Minister, Dr Nigel Clarke is seeking to clarify aspects for the average Jamaican.
Speaking to students from the Wolmer’s Boys and Girls Schools, Dr Clarke questioned whether students knew the main expenses in the trillion-dollar budget. Pensions, he adds is 40 billion dollars. These three items alone account for 70 per cent of the national budget. Watch the report:
