In Portland, the calm Sunday morning was disrupted when a major fire took over the market in Port Antonio. CVM LIVE understands, the blaze subsequently engulfed two other businesses nearby. Hours after the blaze began, despite efforts from citizens and firemen, it seemed to only grow stronger- consuming a supermarket and ravaging through a nearby jewellery store.
Mayor Paul Thompson, describes the event as most unfortunate, explaining at least 75 per cent of the market is damaged and as all stakeholders exhaust efforts to calm the blaze, vendors were forced to not only attempt to rescue their belongings but keep a watchful eye as many saw it as an opportunity to loot, confidently taking what does not belong to them.
Meanwhile, Wayne McKenzie, Councillor for Prospect Division, in the parish, insisted the ordeal was a major crisis. Watch the report:
