Flights Cancelled! Travelers Impacted by Air Strike

On the heels of the strike action of the National Water Commission (NWC) workers, there was an effective closure of the air space for the greater part of Thursday, May 12. The air traffic controllers’ actions resulted in the suspension of air traffic services leaving many tourists and Jamaicans departing the island stranded at the Sangster International Airport as several flights were cancelled. 

CVM LIVE understands that non-functional equipment and poor maintenance are among the issues that prompted the strike. The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) in a release says air traffic services are currently being restored across the country’s airspace. The Flight Board at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James on Thursday tells the tale of the day.

At 5:31 pm on Thursday, the JCAA in a release says “as the dialogue progresses with key stakeholders, particularly the Jamaica Air Traffic Controllers Association, air traffic services are currently being restored across Jamaica’s airspace.” Watch the full report:
