Food Shortage likely for Christmas period due to recent heavy rains – The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) is projecting a food shortage of almost every crop for the upcoming Christmas period. Also, consumers can expect an increase in the prices of vegetables and condiments.
This comes as a result of the recent heavy rainfall across the island causing devastation to food cultivation, livestock, and infrastructure. Farmers suffered substantial losses due to persistent heavy rainfall, with the greatest damage evidenced in St. Elizabeth, St. Catherine, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Clarendon, and Manchester.
Based on an island-wide assessment, the vice president of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) is forecasting the shortage of almost every crop.
Alvaranga says it is unlikely that farmers will be able to get back into production in time to meet the Christmas demand.
