Alternative measures are being used to curb crime in south west St. Andrew. Measures include recreational activities, which inspired a new football field in the vicinity of Payneland.
After recent spikes in crime the police are hopeful the football field will foster a sense of peace. Residents have been crying for a solution, after much tension and crime in sections of south west St. Andrew. The opening of a football field that was sponsored by the sports development foundation brings a sense of peace and unison to the constituency. The police and relevant authorities have been making an attempt at using music, sports and cultural events to reignite the peace in the space.
Operations officer for St. Andrew South, Superintendent Damion Manderson, says he has seen an improvement in the community since the football field was created, and is looking forward to the continued peace in the area. He says the sporting environment targets youth who are accustomed to being in violent situations. The officer hopes the football field will provide a place for them to improve their conflict resolution skills.
Councillor for the Payneland Division, Audrey Smith Facey, says she’s grateful for the continued support of the police in improving the peace in the area.
