Following numerous warnings to the government to provide better compensation and treatment for Jamaica’s teachers else Jamaica may suffer from a mass teacher migration. Former President of the Jamaica Teachers Association, Owen tells CVM LIVE that a major teacher migration is expected in coming weeks. The former president went further to criticize school administrators, who he says complicate matters for the teachers. Adding that there are far too many push factors motivating them to seek employment outside the island.
Speid says the 4% compensation increase offered to teachers is not enough, as he fears more educators will follow in the mass exodus. Despite being late, he’s urging the government to provide incentives and other solutions to keep the teachers in the classroom.
