Former Police Commissioner, Hardley Lewin, has weighed in on plans to have a gun amnesty ahead of the new Firearms Act. While supporting the amnesty period, he argues there must be more measures to effectively retrieve illegal weapons in the country.
Lewin says while he supports a gun amnesty to accompany the new Firearms Act; he is further calling for the ramping up of police operations, to deter the illegal use and possession of firearms. The retired Rear Admiral is however concerned about the disposal of these confiscated weapons, adding during his short tenure as commissioner he managed to destroy approximately 4,500 such weapons. The new firearms bill was recently approved in the house of representatives and will become law in short order.
The new bill, among other punitive measures, proposes a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment for illegal gun possession. Meantime, Lewin reiterates stricter penalties and other measures will be necessary to retrieve all illegal weapons. Watch the report:
