Members of the Free Winnifred Benevolent Society and the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) embarked on a clean-up of the Winnifred Beach, Portland on Saturday, November 6, as part of International Coastal Clean-up. This is in an effort to protect the land and marine environment and keep the beach aesthetically pleasing.
Treasurer of the Free Winnifred Benevolent Society, Cynthia Miller while describing Winifred Beach as one of the best beaches in Jamaica and says it’s imperative it is kept clean, as one of the most popular beaches in Portland. Miller notes that the Society has had to enforce the taking of garbage and no-littering rules, however she notes that though often times persons still leave garbage lying on the beach they are dedicated to keeping the place safe for the marine life.
She says there is usually a clean-up of the beach on Mondays and Tuesdays but on Saturday the society partnered with the Jamaica environment trust (JET) for International Coastal Clean-up.
One volunteer explains how pollution, particularly plastic, threatens marine life. With global attention currently focused on environmental issues, Miller has expressed gratitude to jet for its continued support locally.
