A long-standing member of the local death care industry is appealing for the sector to be regulated coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Citing myriad concerns and potential public health hazards that can result from malpractices, this Funeral Director is urging the authorities to act now. But not in the usual way, as the Disaster Risk Management Act (DRMA) now lifted, forced many Jamaicans to say final goodbyes virtually and in less traditional ways during the pandemic.
Among the critical players forced to pivot were those in the death care industry commonly called funeral homes. He says unlike many other sectors that received financial support the death care industry was not so fortunate. He says if the sector was regulated many lessons learnt could likely be used for the future. He notes a few changes he’d like to see. Watch the full report below:
