Fusion of Powers Causing Weak Parliament Oversight

The National Integrity Action (NIA) is intensifying its efforts to address what it characterizes as inadequate parliamentary oversight. Professor Trevor Munroe, the founding director of NIA, highlights three key deficits in this regard. Over the past thirty years, he has observed a growing public dissatisfaction with democracy. Additionally, he notes deficiencies in the tabling and debating of private members’ bills, as well as the tabling of bills that were subsequently left undebated. Finally, the absence of a code of conduct for parliamentarians is of significant concern to the Integrity Action Commission. Professor Munroe emphasizes that the establishment of this code of conduct was promised in Jamaica’s National Development Plan, Vision 2030, in 2009. Watch the report:
