Golding Calls For Local Government Elections

Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding is calling on the government to call the local government elections now. Golding insists since the country’s Covid-19 numbers are significantly reduced it is a fitting move. He says it’s unconstitutional and undemocratic to delay the elections for two years.

Opposition Leader, Mark Golding is urging the government to call local government elections now, especially since Covid-19 numbers are down and Jamaicans have been rid of the mandates under the disaster risk management act.

The elections have been postponed for two consecutive years. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie in January tabled an amendment to the representation of people act to push the date from no later than February 27 to no later than February 2023. He said covid-19 was the sole reason for the delay.

However, Golding says Covid-19 numbers have significantly declined; therefore it’s the government’s responsibility to now call the elections. He says it’s unconstitutional and undemocratic to deny persons the right to select their Councillors for two whole years.

Meanwhile, he says the PNP is committed to Jamaica becoming a republic and to the switch from the Privy Council to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as the final appellate court.
