Following the tragic death of former Southboro Division Councillor, Ainsley Parkins, the Opposition Leader Mark Golding has called for continuous risk assessment for members of the political directorate. During a tribute ceremony on Monday in the municipality, Golding expressed that the assassination might have been thwarted if the councillor had been provided with security detail. The unexpected and devastating loss of Ainsley Tyson Parkins, a fearless community leader and member of the People’s National Party, PNP, should prompt a much-needed change to ensure the safety of councillors and political officials whose jobs put them at risk.
Opposition Leader Golding emphasized that Councillor Parkins lost his life while diligently carrying out his duties in his division, highlighting the risks that councillors face in many instances. Ainsley Parkins was fatally shot by unknown assailants in a section of Southboro, Portmore, on Thursday, July 20. The Major Investigations Division is currently investigating the murder, but no arrests have been made yet. Meanwhile, the JLP is demanding a retraction and an apology from Opposition Leader Mark Golding over his remarks at a rally on Sunday, insinuating electoral fraud. The Jamaica Labour Party has labeled Golding’s statement as reckless and called for an apology.
