Opposition leader, Mark Golding is chiding Prime Minister, Andrew Holness for his approach to Jamaica’s environmental protection. This as the Prime Minister wraps up his trip to the climate summit in Glasgow recently. Golding challenged the Prime Minister to do more for the environment even as he seeks financial support for climate resilience.
The COP26 summit held recently in Glasgow, Scotland welcomed Prime Minister Andrew Holness among other world leaders. The summit will bring nations together in an effort to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations framework convention on climate change to sustain lives and livelihood.
However, Opposition leader, Mark Golding criticized the Prime Minister and his government for their alleged lackadaisical efforts in protecting the environment. Golding says the environment is lacking proper care and attention as natural habitats are being decimated for development and mining on a daily basis.
He says part of the problem is the alignment of environmental protection agencies such as the National Environmental Planning Agency, (NEPA) with the Ministry of Economic Growth that pursues job creation. Golding says in order to sustain the environment the natural resources conservation act needs to be amended.
