Rio Cobre Juvenile Correctional Centre bigger and better for 2021 – A correctional centre in St Catherine will be improved come 2021 for some juveniles who are wards of the state.
The correctional centre which houses over 40 young men whose ages range between 12 to 17 years and who have been in conflict with the law was toured by Minister without Portfolio, Matthew Samuda where he announced a construction project.
Samuda says the addition of housing and learning blocks is underway to improve the rehabilitation of the juveniles. He says the upgrade of the dormitories will also be a part of the project to make the living condition more favourable to the wards. He is of the belief that this upgrade is crucial to aiding wards with the proper equipment that will better facilitate their reintegration into society.
Unfortunately, the pandemic has dimmed the mentorship aspect of the rehabilitation strategy. The completed construction of the consolidation project for the juvenile correctional centre is set for February of 2021.
