In his Sectoral Debate contribution on Tuesday, Agriculture Minister, Pearnel Charles Jr, announced the government’s plan to mitigate the concern about Jamaica’s food security. Grow smart, eat smart, is the national strategy Agriculture Minister, will be using to tackle the issue of Jamaica’s food security.
Since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine invasion, Jamaica has experienced a negative impact on critical commodities, such as wheat and flour, and the increase in prices for fish and meat, due to rising prices for input namely fertilizers and feed. As such, the Minister says the national food security strategy, will focus on the following areas of priority. He says not only will the ministry boost local production, but it will also target the lowering of the island’s input bill, to mitigate challenges farmers face for production.
Pearnel Charles Jr, went further, to announce the launch of a RADA mobile application for farmers, to boost communication and services. Watch this report for more details:
