The firearms Act of 2022 was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, with harsher penalties for certain offences. National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang, says firearms are the weapons of choice for criminals and criminal organisations operating in Jamaica. He says these criminal groups seek respect by causing fear and terror in communities, noting that as it stands the risk of being apprehended while in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, outweighs the consequences. Dr Chang made the pronouncement while tabling the new firearms (Prohibition, Restriction, and Regulation) Act, 2022.
Chang says the bill which was sent to the joint select committee, proposed the introduction of harsher penalties for certain offences, such as the possession of a prohibited weapon with intent to traffic and manufacturing of a prohibited weapon.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader, Mark Golding, says the party welcomes and supports the objective of the bill, targeting prohibited firearms and the activities they are committed to. However, concerns were raised on mandatory sentencing which is a feature of the bill.
