According to the Head of Operations for the Portland police, Deputy Superintendent Troyville Haughton, most major crimes are on the rise in Portland, and over fifty million dollars worth of ganja has been seized since July.
The Parish of Portland has recorded 5 more murders, 10 additional robberies, and one extra case of rape when compared to the period January 1 to October 12, 2020. Break-ins have also increased by 13 and larceny by 3; However, cases of aggravated assault are down by 4 and shootings remain the same at 11.
Head of Operations for the Portland Police, Deputy Superintendent Troyville Haughton says of the one hundred and ten (110) serious and violent crimes reported for the period, 53 or 48 per cent have been cleared. He reports that the police have also been successful in the seizure of drugs, adding that more than seven thousand, four hundred (7, 400) pounds of ganja, equipment, and boats valued at roughly $56 million have been seized since July.
He notes that the police continue to enforce the Disaster Risk Management Act (DRMA)- which includes fixed penalties ranging from $3,000 to $500,000. Deputy Superintendent Troyville Haughton is imploring persons to be responsible and adhere to all the protocols.
