The Ministry of Health and Wellness, MOHW, is presently overseeing several potential instances of Dengue fever on the island. While touring the Cornwall Regional Hospital recently, Dr. Christopher Tufton, the Minister of Health, emphasized the need for vigilance among the public.
Many find it counterintuitive that drought conditions, with their limited breeding sites, could actually amplify the threat of dengue virus carried by mosquitoes. However, research indicates that both the virus and its vector multiply rapidly in higher temperatures. Dr. Christopher Tufton, states that they have been closely observing this situation in partnership with Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Regional Health Authority.
In the meantime, people are urged to heighten their vigilance regarding the potential threats caused by the need to store water more extensively due to the current water restrictions on the island.
