Health Ministry to Clear Backlog of Elective Surgeries

The Health Ministry, through a special intervention, is bent on clearing a backlog of elective surgeries exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. These include cancer procedures. The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) President recently warned that Jamaica’s public healthcare system would experience a major setback should the Omicron BA.2 subvariant spur the fifth wave of infections.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says this is intended to clear the backlog of elective surgeries in the public health system. To reach that goal, he says the ministry will be working with healthcare professionals across the diaspora who visit

Jamaica for special surgery sessions to provide more efficient arrangements and access to hospital facilities and target elective surgeries with the longest wait. The office of the Chief Medical Officer will plan and execute the Code Care Project.
