Heavy Rainfall Impacting Roads in Sections of St. James

Work is underway following torrential rainfall which resulted in widespread devastation in St.James. The showers which severely damaged a main roadway in the community of unity hall in the parish have the related authorities on their feet. Those analyzing the cleanup operations already underway say it is much too early to put a dollar figure on the devastation.

What is clear is the trail of destruction created panic, as heavy rains pounded sections of western Jamaica on the night of Sunday, November 7 into Monday, November 8, causing severe flooding. This 63-year-old man, with his shoe in hand, says he was on guard in the Paradise community.

In the meantime, despite the resulting infrastructural losses, the Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management, (NSWA) says the garbage left behind was not extensive. The Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay agrees, they have been hit harder in the past.

In the meantime, clean-up exercises to rectify the damage caused by the heavy rainfall will continue throughout St.James. Up to Tuesday, some areas were still experiencing rainfall. Senior forecaster at the Met Service says one of the contributing factors for this unstable weather is climate change. The weatherman says isolated showers remain in the forecast for the entire island.
