Holness En Route To Kigali, Rwanda for CHOGM

Prime Minister Andrew Holness and a team from Jamaica are en route to Kigali, Rwanda for the Biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The event which spans five days runs from June 20 to 25 and could see Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith walking away as Commonwealth Secretary-General. 

The meeting was due to take place in June 2020 but was postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The official opening of the CHOGM takes place on Friday, June 24, and is followed by the main high-level meetings of heads from Friday to Saturday, June 25.

They are proceeded by four forums, ministerial meetings, side events, and other activities. The meeting will also guide the work of the Commonwealth Secretary-General.

On Wednesday the agenda features, ministerial meetings including the commonwealth ministers meeting on small states. The other events include a breakfast meeting tackling issues to do with climate change. 

On Thursday the events include several ministerial high-level meetings on issues such as the global health crisis and violence against women and girls and more.

Friday will consist of executive sessions and Saturday more executive and ministerial meetings. On Saturday too Foreign Ministers will meet with civic leaders and related bodies, before a retreat for the heads of government and a concluding press conference. Watch the report:
