JA Ports Being Used a Regional Model

Jamaica’s ambitions to become a more important player in the global logistics chain, is being noticed by other entities in the region with particular interest being paid to the integration of digital technologies. On Friday a delegation from Barbados toured the port of Kingston as part of a mission to learn more about Jamaica’s Port Community System (PCS)

The pcs was implemented by the Port Authority of Jamaica as an online portal that connects all the major port operators with government regulators such as the Port Authority and Jamaica customs. The operators, being the port terminals, truckers, freight forwarders and shipping agents, all navigate the cargo clearance process.

Director of Terminal Operations at Kingston Wharves Limited, Valrie Campbell said this online system will produce a seamless cargo clearance process and benefit clients. CEO of Kingston Wharves Limited, Mark Williams said among plans to improve the facility, are discussions surrounding the possibility of extending the facility’s operations to 24 hours.

Manager of digital innovation and development at Barbados Port Inc. Rommel Edwards said he is incredibly intrigued by Jamaica’s port system, and looks forward to upgrading their ports in a similar fashion. Kingston wharves was the recipient of the 2021 port industry award of excellence, which was in recognition of their strides in harnessing digital technology in various aspects of its operations.
