Jamaica: CSEC And CAPE Results Are Out

Results for the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced  Proficiency  Examination (CAPE) are now available online. The exams took place at a time when learning was forced to go online amid the realities of the Coronavirus. Over thirty-two thousand students sat the examinations.

Newly-appointed Minister of Education Youth and Information, Fayval Williams,  while speaking at a news conference at the Office of the Prime Minister announced the islandwide performance of students. Williams says the results indicate that there is an urgent need to get students back in the learning mode.

Students sat the exam in July instead of the customary Caribbean Examination Council’s (CXC) May/June sitting, amid extensive disruptions in the education system caused by the ongoing health crisis. All schools were ordered shut on March 13, three days after Jamaica confirmed its first case of the Coronavirus.

Portland teacher, Richard Burke, says the low CSEC and CAPE passes may not be reflective of the students’ potential.

Burke went on to say that ahead of the reopening of the new school year,  the Government and educational institutions should engage students in the most effective way.
