The Jamaica Customs Agency and the Financial Investigations Division (FID) on Tuesday inked a formal understanding to foster greater information sharing and cross border monitoring of illicit activities. The push comes at a time when the gun for drugs and other illicit trades have been highlighted as factors boosting crime locally. Both entities assure border security remains a top priority, hence the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Chief technical director in the Financial Investigations Division (FID) Selvin Hay says the memorandum of understanding was a long time coming and proves very important.
He says the MoU will formalize longstanding arrangements and the working relationship between the two entities when it comes to border security and clamping down on contraband.
In the interim, CEO and Commissioner of Customs, Velma Ricketts Walker says the partnership signals increased efforts toward border safety. She says the fid has played a significant role in developing the human resource capacity of Jamaica Customs.
The Customs Commissioner says there will be a greater thrust to share information and collaborate in combating cross-border illicit activities. More details in the report below:
